CopyWronged Episode IV: A New Direction

Updated: Jul 12

In this post, I'll address the third reason I fought my copyright case. I originally intended to save this for a book I've been working on for almost ten years. However, my supervised release conditions prevent me from selling anything online, so publishing a new Kindle book is off the table for now.

Instead, I've decided to explain the backstory of my case and all the relevant factors (that I can disclose, anyway—that's going to be tricky). I still plan to publish the book when I'm legally allowed to do so. I've always been more of a "beg-for-forgiveness-instead-of-ask-permission" type of person (no surprise, right?), but I'm trying, Ringo, I'm trying real hard.

This brings me to the final factor: there are still parts of the underlying story behind my copyright conviction that remain unknown to me. In this blog, I'll share the details as I've experienced them. While they may not make sense now, they will in the future as other aspects of the story are revealed. I don't even know if that makes sense, but that's the great part about blogs: they can always be edited and rewritten, sometimes months or even years later. As a messy, disconnected writer myself, I love that. I feel some writings or stories are never really done and could be one edit away from being a masterpiece. (Just kidding, I'm not that narcissistic.)

What I'm trying to say is, the copyright and mail fraud case against me has never really been about copyright or mail fraud! I'm going to tell the story as I see it and include names of people who have been provenly involved or convicted in the real case, but I'll hint at others who haven't been proven or convicted. They may even be indicted, but the indictments are sealed (sealed indictments are an interesting legal concept). I'll do my best to protect the innocent, just warning you. For lack of a better name, I'm calling the real case the "Walmart Theft Ring." I hope this will make more sense as the story unfolds.

Next Time: CopyWronged: Episode I The Pretextual Menace (Yeah, there will be a lot of Star Wars references and innuendo). Big shocker!
